Awards - Burke Family Trophy

Burke Family Trophy

for Most Outstanding U20 Track Athlete

Following the amalgamation of the NSW Women’s Amateur Athletic Association with the Men’s Association in 1981, the Ryde Club amended its constitution to include male athletes. As a result, many older athletes joined the club, and it became necessary to introduce an award for those in the under-20 age group, as too many were otherwise classified in the senior division.

The Burke family, who had previously been involved with the club through their daughters, wished to donate a trophy, and this proved to be an ideal opportunity to establish the award.

The inaugural winner in the 1982/83 season was Lyndall Garling, one of the club’s leading hurdlers, who went on to achieve numerous state and national titles.
