Wang Family Gift

Winner of the Annual Social Athletics 100m Handicap Race

In the 2022/23 season, the club introduced a new annual race to complement its social athletics program. This initiative runs alongside Saturday morning junior competition, offering parents the opportunity to participate in weekly events. It provides an accessible entry point, or return, to athletics for adults without requiring full Masters registration. At the end of each season, a 100m handicap race is held, with parents competing against their children.

The inaugural race in 2022/23 carried naming rights for the trophy and was eagerly anticipated. In a memorable finish, mum (and Masters athlete) Annie Wang defeated future club captain Claudia Barlow to claim victory and secure naming rights for the Wang Family Gift trophy.

In the following season, another parent and Masters athlete, Nick Pawsey, triumphed, finishing ahead of his daughters. In the third running, in 2024/25, Nancy Barlow won a tightly contested race, earning the Barlow family a place on the trophy and avenging her sister Claudia, who still rues the earlier missed opportunity to claim naming rights!

The fourth running brought early drama, as eventual winner Hugo Griffiths was initially nowhere to be found and was eventually discovered enjoying the bouncy castle. Arriving just in time for the start, Hugo sprinted the race barefoot, storming home well ahead of the field to become the youngest winner to date.
