Awards - Michael Atterton Memorial Trophy

Michael Atterton Memorial Trophy

for Most Outstanding Female Athlete

In 1977, the Atterton family donated a trophy in memory of their son, who had tragically drowned. The award was established to recognise the most outstanding athlete. At that time, the recipient was necessarily female, as the Association had not yet merged with the men’s competition. Following the introduction of the Kendall Simpson Trophy to honour outstanding male athletic performance, the Atterton Memorial Trophy was thereafter designated specifically for female athletes.

The first athlete to receive this trophy was Miriam Spitteler, who at the time was still a Sub-Junior (Under-16). She won two gold medals at the NSW State Championships in the 13-year 100 metres and 200 metres, setting a new NSW record of 25.8 seconds in the 200 metres.
